چکیده

The recent literature contains numerous references to the use of partially hydrolyzed dextrans as plasma substitutes (Bull et al., 1949; Thorsen, 1949). Because of this interest, and as part of a general study of bacterial polysaccharide synthesis, the nutritional requirements of the major dextran forming organisms, Leuconostoc mesenteroides and L. dextranicum, are being investigated (WhitesideCarlson and Carlson, 1949a). The present report deals with Leuconostoc dextranicum, strain "elai," which is unique in causing essentially complete conversion of the glucose half of the sucrose molecule into dextran.

The fermentation of sucrose by Leuconostoc mesenteroides.

The slime forming Leuconostoc mesnreroides is distributed widely in nature and is apparently ubiquitous in sugar factories. Neill, Hehre, Sugg, and Jaffe (1939) found dextran, a fermentation product of L. meenteroides, in all samples of cp sucrose examined. This organism, long a nuisance in the factory, has in recent years attracted wide interest because of the commercial possibilities of the d...

Characterization of the Dextran Produced by Leuconostoc mesenteroides from Date Fruit Extract

In the present study, the production of dextran from date extract and sucrose as carbon sources by the bacterium Leuconostoc mesenteroides NRRL B512 (f) was investigated. In comparison to blue dextran (Mw≈2000 Da), dextran molecular weight was reduced (Mw2000 KDa). Flow behavior indices of dextran solutions from date extracts were investigated and rheological parameters were evaluated at concen...

SOME INTERRELATlONSHIPS OF ASPARTIC ACID, THREONINE, AND LYSINE

In a study of minimal requirements for certain lactobacilli, Leuconostoc dextranicum 8086 was observed to require either aspartic acid or threonine for growth in a particular medium. Since such an observation does not allow specific conclusions regarding the relationship of these two amino acids, a study of this interrelationship in lactobacilli in which aspartic acid biosynthesis can be contro...

Logarithmically growing cells transferred from 30 ...
